| Jesus described Himself using two words. Considering that Jesus Christ is the King of kings, the Creator of all living things, and God's own Son, the two descriptive words He chose seem almost bewildering and out of place. Jesus made this statement in Matthew 11:29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. The words meek and lowly complement each other in meaning. Meekness involves humility, gentleness, and strength under control. Lowly refers to one's station in life—humble and unassuming. The irony is that our Savior describes His innermost heart with these words and then invites me to learn from Him, side by side. When I think of who I am and who He is—how awesome, great, and magnificent He is, yet still approachable, kind, and gentle—I get this beautiful picture of someone who is not weak but has all power under control and extends His gentle hand of help to me... a nobody. "Meek and lowly" are not common descriptors of the people we encounter or see on social media today. I was challenged to ask myself, Where is Christ's character showing up in my life in this way? What is it about me that touches others the way Jesus did? What two words would others use to describe me? And what two words would they use to describe you? Be Encouraged. |
