Therefore, we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
— Hebrews 2:1
What can we let slip? It was the first question that came to mind. I have always been told that when a verse in Scripture starts with “therefore,” you must read the prior verses to understand what the “therefore” is there for.
The writer of Hebrews begins the previous chapter by discussing how God has spoken to His people in times past and then goes on to affirm the deity and authority of Jesus Christ. I then understood that what we can’t let slip is the truth. Jesus came as the way, the truth, and the life (See John 14:6), and we are being admonished in this verse not to miss the truth.
The word slip means “to flow by, to carelessly pass, or to miss.” I know I’ve been guilty of doing just that—tuning out during a Sunday sermon, letting a podcast go in one ear and out the other, or neglecting the Bible that sits right in front of me.
If I were wading through a rushing river and I looked down to see a gold nugget tumbling along the river bottom, you would say I was absolutely insane to simply watch it flow by without reaching out to grab a hold of it.
I don’t want to miss out on those treasures of God’s Word that flow by on the current of life. Let’s not let them slip!
Be Encouraged,
