The great John the Baptist—the herald of the Messiah, the voice crying in the wilderness, the man foretold by prophets, the forerunner of Jesus Christ… and yet, still a man.
At the end of his life, in the midst of suffering, he asks Jesus a question that almost seems unthinkable:
“Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?”
Matthew 11:3
This is a man of remarkable faith and calling—yet in his lowest moment, he brings his doubt directly to Jesus.
There are two things here that I marvel at: the humility of John and the gentleness of Jesus. John didn’t try to mask the fact that he was struggling. He was honest, humble, and needed help.
Jesus’ response is so patient. He does not rebuke him, and He does not shame him. Instead, He reminds John of what is true—of the works He has done, of the evidence right in front of him. When doubt crept in, Jesus answered with truth.
It raises a question for me:
Is Jesus my first response to my doubt and fear?
Where do I turn when I need the reassurance of what is true and to anchor my faith? Am I humble enough to ask for help in times of need?
Be encouraged today. Whatever is on your heart, big or small, take it to Him.
Tell it to Jesus. He truly cares.
