As I sat on the pew, Bible open, listening intently as the preacher read the passage for his text. I thumbed open to Revelation four, verse eleven, as he read, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.” He asked, “What is your purpose here on earth?” I’ve thought of that many times throughout my life, as I am sure you have, too.
It is possibly the most important question we should ask because knowing the answer changes how we live and think. According to this verse, I believe our purpose is to glorify and honor God while bringing others to Him.
Paul Chappell shared this thought, “Every one of us needs a reason to live—a compelling cause and purpose that keeps us going when we would rather quit.” Instead of focusing on myself and what brings me joy or success, I should prioritize honoring the Lord and glorifying Him in my words and actions. The crazy thing about it is the most amazing fulfillment and joy comes from serving Jesus.
I must be intentional about ensuring my life decisions align with my purpose for living. If I understand my purpose, everything else I do will grow out of that. It doesn’t mean I cannot enjoy this life because the Bible says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…”. God desires His children to delight in His blessings here on earth- the beauty in nature, delicious food, a loving family, and close friends… and the list could go on. Still, I need to remind myself, above all else, that my life is to glorify and point others to Him. I want to be passionate about making Him known because this is my purpose.
Be Encouraged.
