So Very Rich

by | June 16, 2025

I was caught off guard when my 5-year-old looked up at me and said, “Dad, we are so rich, aren’t we?”My mind immediately began to race — thinking of all the things we don’t have that the world might use to define “rich.” In that moment, I leaned down and asked her, “Why do you say that?”Without hesitation, she said, “Because we have lots of food, we have so many clothes, and we have this house to live in!”Her words stopped me. But those are just the basics,” I thought…but then God gently convicted my heart. My little girl was absolutely right — and I was so wrong.
She didn’t measure our lives by the standards of the world. She was simply grateful for what we had. In her gratitude, I was reminded of how rich we truly are.
Scripture echoes her wisdom:
“And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” — 1 Timothy 6:8
In that moment, God used a 5-year-old to teach me a profound lesson about contentment. Instead of focusing on what we had or didn’t have, my heart should be fixed on the Giver of every good thing. I have Jesus, what more do I need?
As Paul writes:
“Godliness with contentment is great gain.” — 1 Timothy 6:6
This week, I’m taking the time to write down the blessings I’ve been overlooking. I’m making a list of what I’m grateful for — not just the big things, but the “basics” that are truly treasures. I invite you to join me. Grab a pen and paper and begin listing the blessings around you.
When we pause to see clearly, we realize we are so very rich.
Be encouraged.
