Enemy of the Best

by | May 27, 2025

I’ve often been told by a very wise man—my father—not to ask, “Is this good?” but instead, “Is this best?”Over the years, I’ve come to understand the profound wisdom behind that question. It’s easy to justify decisions by labeling them as “good.” But if we stop there, we may fall short of the best God desires.
One of my favorite spiritually minded writers, Oswald Chambers, expressed this truth clearly:
“The great enemy of the life of faith in God is not sin, but the good which is not good enough. The good is always the enemy of the best.”
There are countless “good” things constantly vying for our time, energy, and attention. But the life of faith doesn’t merely involve choosing between good and evil—it often requires choosing between what is good and what is best.
So how do we know what is best?
I truly believe we can only discern this by walking closely with the Lord—abiding in Him daily, staying rooted in His Word, spending time in prayer, and remaining sensitive to His Spirit. This isn’t mystical or far-fetched. It’s simply living out a relationship with God.
Jesus promised us in John 16:13:
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.”
God is not hiding His best from us. He delights in showing us the way when we seek Him. As Psalm 16:11 beautifully says:
“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
Let’s not settle for what is merely good. Let’s walk closely with the Lord and trust Him to lead us to what is best.
Be encouraged.
