Thoughts from Date Night

by | June 27, 2022

A couple nights ago, Chad took me on a date! He knows me well enough to know that I would rather just grab something quick and spend the majority of our time talking, preferably somewhere scenic and quiet. It was a beautiful night by the lake. We talked about the kids, our day-to-day experiences, and reminisced about our love story.

As we held hands, I looked in his eyes and thought: Wow! I don’t think I could possibly love him any more than I do now! — which is exactly what I thought on our wedding day, and goodness, my love for him has quadrupled since then. The more I get to know Chad, the more I love who he is. I adore his personality, his character, and his looks! I feel so grateful and honored to be his wife. He is my absolute best friend on this earth.

As we headed home later that night, I thought about my relationship with the Lord. I see so many similarities in how my love for Him has only grown. I remember the day I got saved as a thirteen year old girl. I LOVED Jesus with all of my heart, and as the years have passed, my love for who He is has only grown. The more time I spend with Him, the more grateful I am for Him. The Bible says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you” (James 4:8a).

How do you get close to a friend? You spend time with them. You learn about them. You listen to them. Your relationship with the Lord is no different. I want to be constantly growing closer to the Lord. The same “I-never-want-it-to-end” feeling I get when our date night comes to a close . . . I just want to talk a little longer. Hug a little tighter. Laugh a little harder, because I love to be with him. I love feeling close. I love his friendship. He knows me. I know him.

Marriage is undeniably beautiful, but my relationship with Jesus is my highest priority. The hymn writer, Joseph Scrivener said it better than I ever could:

What a Friend we have in Jesus,

  All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

  Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

  O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry

  Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations?

  Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged,

  Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful

  Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness,

  Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,

  Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—

  Take it to the Lord in prayer;

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

  Take it to the Lord in prayer;

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,

  Thou wilt find a solace there.

Love,

Erin
