Recently I’ve been thinking about how to find light when you feel like you’re in the middle of darkness. The world around us seems like such a dark place at times. There have also been times in my own life when it feels dark emotionally and spiritually.
Late one evening, I was reading through different Psalms, and one in particular stood out. I encourage you to take the time to read the whole passage, but I will share what spoke to me through it.
In Psalm 143, David opens this chapter by sharing how the enemy has been at work in his own life, and he has been dwelling in darkness. I don’t know the exact circumstances he was facing, but he felt overwhelmed and discouraged. I know most of us can relate to this feeling in our own life. At this point in the chapter, though, you can almost envision the change in his perspective. It is like he is expressing how he found hope and comfort even in this challenging time.
I just got out my pen, and one by one; I started writing what David did.
- He remembered God’s faithfulness and His goodness in the past. (verse 5)
- He started meditating on Who God is. (verse 5b)
- He started worshipping the Lord. (verse 6)
- Lastly, you see (starting in verse 7) this beautiful prayer he starts praying. You can sense his spirit changes as he starts communing with the Lord.
I don’t know what you might be facing today, but if you’re walking through a dark time right now, you can find hope in Christ just like David did. The God of the mountain is still God in the valley.
Be encouraged.
